What is the lifespan of an e-cigarette battery?
Buying an e-cigarette battery isn't a small investment. An e-cigarette battery is significantly more expensive than a standard disposable battery, and you want to know that it'll last. The great news is that lithium ion e-cigarette batteries are stronger, more reliable and longer lasting today than ever before. Even if you drain and recharge your Liberty Flights e-cigarette battery once every day, you can expect the battery to last for about 200 charge cycles before its capacity begins to decline sharply.
Why Does an E-Cigarette Battery Lose Its Capacity Over Time?
During repeated charging and discharging, the chemical components in a lithium ion battery begin to break down. Heat and chemical decomposition alter the electrolyte inside the battery and can cause oxidation. Since the breaking down of the battery affects its internal structure, the battery eventually loses its ability to hold a charge. Because the act of using a lithium ion battery causes it to break down, it is inevitable that a battery will eventually lose its charge capacity permanently. However, there are a few things that you can do to maximise the life of an e-cigarette battery.
What Can I Do to Make My E-Cigarette Battery Last Longer?
Keep Your Batteries Cool to Maximise Their Life
The most important thing that you can do to prolong the life of your e-cigarette batteries is to avoid using, charging and storing them in high temperatures. Storing a lithium ion battery for one year at a temperature of 25° C reduces its maximum capacity permanently by about 20 percent. Storing a battery at 40° C for one year reduces its capacity by 35 percent. If you use your batteries in high-temperature conditions, you'll reduce their life even more quickly -- so try to keep your batteries cool.
Avoid Overcharging Your Batteries
A typical lithium ion battery is fully charged at 4.2 volts. You should never exceed a battery's target voltage when charging because doing so can drastically reduce the battery's life. Charging a battery to 4.35 volts, for example, reduces its life by about half.
The good news is that, with Liberty Flights, there's no need to worry about overcharging your batteries. Our batteries and chargers automatically turn off after completing a charge cycle.
Use the Correct Charger for Your Battery
You should only charge your battery with a charging adapter that bears the Liberty Flights logo. Connect the adapter to your computer's USB port or to a Liberty Flights-approved mains adapter. The best charging adapter for an e-cigarette battery is one that supplies power slowly. Fast charging adapters -- such as those included with some mobile phones -- can cause e-cigarette batteries to become overly hot during charging. The extreme heat can potentially cause a fire. Even if the added heat doesn't cause a fire, though, it will reduce the lifespan of the battery.
What Should I Do With an E-Cigarette Battery That No Longer Holds a Charge?
People around the world discard an estimated 6 billion batteries per year. Those batteries leak toxic chemicals into the soil, polluting groundwater and contaminating plant life. Don't discard your used e-cigarette batteries -- recycle them. Ask about battery recycling services at your local electronics store or visit the Australian Battery Recycling Initiative.
